Term Paper 2: Movie Review
Being from the south a lot of the time means you aren’t just a fan of football, but you're born into it. It's a part of every household, and an institute on mine on Saturdays during college football season. So, when I looked at my hometown theater’s website and saw the movie “The Senior” and looked at the description, I knew that had to be the movie I picked to review. Nowadays, many people don’t go to the movies, because you can simply watch them from home on your mobile device, which is convenient and sometimes can be cheaper than taking a trip to the movies. This is even true for me, being that this was my first time in Texarkana’s theatre in probably two years. I'm not just the biggest fan of movies, it takes a lot for me just to sit and watch something, but for this assignment allowed me to look at everything in and around of the movie and the movie theatre. So, I was excited for this experience to truly take in what was around me and my overall experience.
I got to the theater around 11:30 because I knew my screening was at 12:00, so that I could go to concessions, watch the preview ads, and get comfortable. I knew, being a Thursday, there wasn’t going to be a lot of people watching a movie, so I had the idea that I could get a full-screen movie all to myself. I was the only car in the parking lot as I walked into the theater. When you walk into Texarkana’s Cinemark now, you no longer buy tickets at the front ticket booth; you buy your ticket and pick your seat while you purchase your soft drink and popcorn. In my mind I saw this as a marketing technique, because of now where you have to go and buy your ticket it allows you to smell fresh hot popcorn, and see the varieties of drinks you can purchase. This allows the movie theatre to reel you in and take more of your money. This method is different than what I'm used to, but I think it is quicker.
I walked into the snack line (where I was the only person there), and purchased a medium Coca-Cola Icee ($4.40), a small popcorn ($8.20), and my movie ticket ($8.39). The total I spent to see the movie was around $21.00, which isn’t too bad, but could be better. But when I go to a movie theatre, I want the full experience, and obviously that includes snacks. I chose my seat (J8), which was directly at the top of the screening room, directly in the middle. There were only three seats bought for the movie, so it was basically the whole movie room to yourself. Which I didn't mind at all.
I got into the theatre room around 11:40 after getting lost trying to find house 14 (don't ask me how I did that, but it happened), and when I arrived the movie ads had just begun. The ads were marketing up and coming movies, especially the second part of: “Wicked.” The ads continued to make sure you had your drinks and popcorn (another marketing technique), and to silence your phone.
“The Senior” lasted two hours and honestly was a 10 out of 10 heartfelt movies. The movie was based on the true story of Mike Flynt, a 59-year-old grandfather who played football three years at Sul Ross State Lobos college in 1971 but was kicked out of college his senior year for fighting and making bad decisions. For over three decades, Flynt fights with the guilt he has, and what he should or shouldn’t have done in football and in his life. Flynt convinces his wife to come with him back to his college campus to try out for the team. Reluctantly against all odds, he makes the 2007 team and becomes a hometown hero. Flynt finds his faith, helps his teammates win their last game, and finds himself again after three decades. Flynt could finally move on, because he could finally forgive himself. The quote on the poster for the movie is "True Story and Ultimate Comeback", and that is exactly what this story was. This movie shows the testimony that you can do anything you put your mind to; you just simply have to believe in yourself. Well and in Mike Flynt’s case, be prepared for a few grandpa jokes.
Not only was the movie a 10 out of 10, but so was my Cinemark experience. I think what I paid for the concession, and my ticket was worth it. I think that it is totally worth going to the movies on a random weekday, because you basically have it to yourself. “The Senior” is an inspirational, heartwarming movie that I would recommend anyone watch. Although the convenience of your home watching a movie is comfortable, everyone should get out at least once a year and watch a movie at your traditional theatre, because you may pay a little more money, but you won’t regret your experience.
